What Causes the Error<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>First and foremost, seeing this error is quite normal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Usually, the error is rendered when you are updating your plugins, themes or even WordPress itself. How to Fix the Error<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>There are two quick ways on how to go about resolving the error:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>FTP (File Transfer Protocol)<\/li><li>cPanel<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>These methods will involve deleting the&nbsp;<code>.maintenance<\/code>&nbsp;file. This is a file within the root of your WordPress files, that is added by WordPress automatically once you trigger an update within your website environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is also the file responsible for displaying the error message. Usually, if an update is complete, the file is removed but in cases where the update is incomplete, the file remains and you would need to delete it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2.1 FTP (File Transfer Protocol)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Here, you would need to use an FTP program such as&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/filezilla-project.org\/\">Filezilla<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In this article, we will have the illustrations using FileZilla.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You will first need to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Login to your website via Filezilla. You can consult your host to provide you with your FTP details in case you currently don\u2019t have these in place.<\/li><li>Access the root of your WordPress files and search for the&nbsp;<code>.maintenance<\/code> file. In case you are not in a position to trace it, please ensure that you enable the visibility of hidden files within Filezilla. To do so, navigate to the \u201cServer\u201d menu and click on the \u201cForce Showing Hidden Files\u201d option.<\/li><li>Once you have a trace of the file, you can go ahead and delete it.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/neoxea.com\/kb2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/maintenanceerrorftp.png\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2.2 cPanel<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This is more similar to method 1 above and easier in case you use the control panel provided by your host to manage your site.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What you would need to do here is access the cPanel for your site and use your credentials to log in to it. You can consult your host for these credentials in case you don\u2019t have them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once logged in, you need to access the File Manager section:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/neoxea.com\/kb2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/maintenanceerrorcpanel-1024x408.png\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>From here, navigate to the root of your website files (public_html) folder and search for the&nbsp;<code>.maintenance<\/code>&nbsp;file<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you are not in a position to view the file, ensure that you enable the visibility of hidden files from the \u201cSettings\u201d section. How to avoid the error in future<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Avoid carrying out multiple updates to plugins and themes at a go. I would recommend updating your plugins or themes one at a time.<\/li><li>Do not terminate your browser session while carrying out the updates.
